Lake living comes with incredible views—and increased risk when storms roll in. Preparing ahead of time is the best way to take care of your property and your family and guests.
Planning
Start by understanding your land and any areas – especially those near your home – that may be susceptible to flooding or low spots. Waterfront properties are especially vulnerable to high winds, and rapid water level changes, so assume a higher risk profile than inland homes. Create a written plan and list that covers evacuation routes, where you will go, and how you will communicate if power or cell service is disrupted. Include pets, elderly relatives, and any renters or guests in that plan so no one is left scrambling at the last minute.
Inspect and Fix
Well before storm season, inspect your seawall, dock, and shoreline for cracks, erosion, or loose materials that could fail or become dangerous debris in high winds. Trim trees and shrubs, secure or store outdoor furniture and grills, and remove anything that could become a projectile. Protect vulnerable openings by installing storm shutters or impact‑rated windows, reinforcing exterior doors, and checking your roof for loose shingles or weak spots. Around the home, improve drainage with clear gutters, graded landscaping, and, where appropriate, French drains or swales to redirect water away from foundations.
Stay Informed
As a storm approaches and monitor local weather alerts. Keep a kit ready with at least a days’ water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, and batteries. If you have boats or watercraft, secure them with extra lines or move them to land. Finally, review your insurance annually to confirm you have adequate coverage, document your belongings with photos, and know how to file a claim so you can start recovery as soon as conditions are safe.
